I have worked for many years as a clinical psychologist, 15 years at downtown Toronto teaching hospitals and 20 years in independent practice including a few years of teaching at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. While writing with artist Susan Schellenberg on a book, Committed to the Sane Asylum, I began seeing arts events related to mental illness, wellness, and recovery. Some left me feeling healed and revitalized, while others left me discouraged. I wondered why my experiences were so different, so started to think and write about this. This blog shares my thoughts in the form of reviews of events around Toronto that are related to mental illness, recovery, or healing from emotional pain.
At their best, expressive arts events are healing. I hope that my blog encourages people to go to events and talk about them, and thus contributes to more visible events and interesting lives.
